Pennsylvania can claim to be the home of the first recognition of Thanksgiving, when Gov. Simon Snyder was the first to recognize it as an official holiday on the third Thursday of November in 1817.

In honor of the Thanksgiving holiday on Nov. 23, state offices will be closed on Thursday, and my Bentleyville district office will also be closed on Friday, Nov. 24.

Wishing everyone a safe, healthy and happy Thanksgiving. We have so much to be thankful for in our communities, state and country!

Another important “holiday” for many is upon us as well! Best wishes and safe hunting to everyone heading out for the first day of antlered deer season on Monday, Nov. 27.

To spotlight the role that small businesses play, Small Business Saturday will be held Saturday, Nov. 25, to encourage residents to shop small this holiday season.

Nearly 1 million small businesses in Pennsylvania employ about 2.4 million workers, as of 2014, and make up more than 98 percent of the state’s employers.

Our next Solving the Opioid Crisis Community Forum will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 29, at the Stockdale Volunteer Fire Department, 320 Railroad Ave., Stockdale, PA 15483, beginning at 6 p.m.

We covered addiction treatment during our October meeting. This time around, we will be focusing on the subject of prosecution.

We’ll be talking with district attorneys, sheriffs, local EMTs and others on the front lines about which laws need to be updated and enforced to keep people from illegally acquiring opioids; what needs to be done to keep drug peddlers off our streets; and, finally, what needs to happen at the legislative level to give our emergency responders and law enforcement the tools they need to combat this terrible epidemic.

Interested individuals should register for this FREE event as soon as possible by calling my Bentleyville district office at (724) 669-2242.
