Steel Manufacturing Critical for Jobs, Economy, Security
Last week, I joined southwestern Pennsylvania House members on a fascinating tour of U.S. Steel’s Pittsburgh-area operations to learn more about the company’s advanced manufacturing process and how employees provide support to the company’s integrated steelmaking operations worldwide.
The tour included stops at the Mon Valley Works’ Clairton Coke Plant and the Edgar Thomson Plant, where the company converts raw materials – including American-produced coke and iron ore – into high-quality iron and steel products.
In total, U.S. Steel has 4,000 employees in Pennsylvania, the majority of whom live in southwestern PA. Last year, the company’s Mon Valley Works generated $4.6 billion in economic output throughout the region.
Having the ability to manufacture steel here in the Mon Valley and surrounding areas is critical not only for our region, but also for our nation’s future economic and national security.
We can all be very proud of the history of the Pittsburgh region’s steel industry, and equally enthusiastic and excited about its future, and what it may mean for our region and the entire Commonwealth.

Safely Dispose of Unused Prescriptions This Saturday
District 49 residents have an opportunity to remove opioids and other unused medicines from homes this Saturday, April 27, as part of the National Prescription Drug Take Back Day.
More than 18 tons of prescription drugs were disposed of across Pennsylvania in the Prescription Drug Take Back Day held last October. The initiative helps prevent unused medications ending up in the wrong hands.
Locations to safely dispose of unused drugs are listed here.
You can also find permanent disposal boxes in your community by clicking here.

Progress Ahead of Politics in the 49th District!
A Place for Growing
On Wednesday, I was invited to visit the wonderful program at Grace United Methodist Church Christian Education Center in West Pike Run. The teachers and students in this program are outstanding! This very special place is where I grew up and later taught Sunday School while in high school. Just one more place growing up that made me who I have become today!
Breakfast with Business
Our latest Breakfast with Business on April 23 was another tremendous success. Many thanks to the participating District 49 business leaders, the Monongahela Chamber of Commerce and the Monongahela Valley Hospital for hosting such a productive event!
Really Great Smelts in the 49th District
Thank you to John Matty and the Newell Santa Barbara Club for the outstanding smelts and hospitality!
