Remembering 2021 Women In Leadership Conference Guest of Honor Carol Stotka

By State Rep. Bud Cook (R-Washington/Fayette)
In 2021, I had the honor to interview Carol Ann Stotka. In my seven years as state representative, that interview remains one my favorite opportunities I’ve had the pleasure to do. Stotka has recently passed away, but her influence will stay with me for years to come.

Stotka was a devoted mother of four and one of the first women coal miners. Not only did she do hard labor in the mines, but she was an advocate for equality in the workplace for women and other minorities. Stotka faced harassment daily for being a woman in the mines, but she persevered and fought for a better life for herself, for her children, and for future women miners and other labor-intensive industries.

It is my pleasure to host an annual Women In Leadership Conference. Stotka was present for the first annual conference and was recognized as the guest of honor. Attendees had the chance to hear her remarkable story and be inspired by her story. To hear her story, visit RepBudCook.com/Video/LatestVideo.

Her influence on the mining world can still be felt, as she paved the way for women to have a place in a male-dominated industry. She will be missed greatly, but her legacy lives on.
