Cook: More Than $8 Million Awarded to Reclaim Abandoned Mine Lands in Greene County
HARRISBURG – Rep. Bud Cook (R-Greene/Washington) today announced $8.3 million in grant funding from the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) for cleanup of abandoned coal mine lands in Greene County.
The funding was awarded to Natural Streams Foundation and will be used to remove coal refuse from abandoned mine land sites and restore over six acres of land in Cumberland Township. Funding was awarded through the federal Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.
“Cleaning up abandoned coal mines promotes strong economic opportunities, and expands our quality of life,” Cook said. “Here in the 50th district, I am proud to always advocate for projects like this which revitalize our region.”
DEP prioritizes grant funding to address human health and safety problems resulting from abandoned coal mines, as well as treating acid mine drainage (AMD) to continue watershed restoration under the AMD Set-Aside Program and prevent the loss of restored streams.
