HARRISBURG – Rep. Bud Cook (R-Fayette/Washington) stands in support with five women members of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives who introduced House Bill 972, the Fairness in Women’s Sports Act.

“For years, women have worked to advance their sports and allowing biological males to compete in their sports would be a huge loss for girls and women,” said Cook. “Our females deserve to keep making progress and to have fun while playing fairly. I am proud to support my colleagues on their legislation that fights for women athletes.”

Cook noted the bill is aimed at preserving Title IX, which was passed by Congress in 1972 to ban sex discrimination in education programs and activities offered by entities receiving federal financial assistance. Title IX was designed to stop discrimination and create equal athletic opportunities for women.

On President Biden’s first day in office, he filed an executive order to require biological males be permitted to compete on women’s sports teams in high school and college. This order violates Title IX.

If courts were to uphold this executive order, any school that receives federal funding, including nearly every public high school, must either allow biological boys who self-identify as girls on to girls’ sports teams or face administrative action from the Department of Education.

Cook said he supports House Bill 972 to protect Title IX and promote gender equality by giving biological females a fair playing field when competing, thereby granting better access to scholarship opportunities and future success in life.
