Cook Announces Grant for California Area School District
May 3, 2021
WASHINGTON COUNTY – Rep. Bud Cook (R-Washington/Fayette) announced that the California Area School District in Washington County has received an agricultural grant. The district will be awarded $9,814.94 for curriculum and experiential learning as part of the Farm to School Grant Program administered by the Department of Agriculture.
The program provides schools with funding to improve access to healthy, local foods and increase agricultural education opportunities. “Farming is one of the 49th District’s biggest assets,” said Cook. “This money will help our youth to understand their district better than before, and will hopefully spark an interest in farming for their future.”
This program is also designed to encourage eating healthy, home-grown foods. Children will become more aware and engaged with their local food system and will learn to support their local farmers.
“Making our children more aware of what they’re putting into their bodies is only the beginning,” Cook continued. “Even if they don’t find an interest in farming, my hope is they will always be interested in supporting local and eating healthy. This money is an exciting thing for our school, students, parents and farmers.”
