Cook: California Area Schools Receive Grants to Boost Agriculture Program

November 14, 2023

HARRISBURG – Rep. Bud Cook (R- Greene/Washington) today announced that the agriculture programs at California Area School District (CASD) and California Academy of Learning Charter School (CALCS) received funding from the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture’s Farm-to-School Grant Program.

“After visiting on a few occasions, I know California Area students are really benefiting from gaining first-hand experience though the agriculture program,” Cook said. “Every time a young person learns more about farming, about where their food comes from, Pennsylvania gains a smarter consumer.”

The CASD agriculture program currently includes raising chickens and keeping beehives. Students throughout the district have opportunities to learn about agriculture through hands-on instruction and an organized curriculum.

The CASD program was awarded a grant of $15,000 and the CALCS program was awarded a grant of $10,874.

“Our groceries don’t just magically appear at supermarkets and restaurants. From time to time, folks need a reminder of the amount of work that goes into maintaining our food supplies,” said Cook. “The programs at these schools go a long way in making certain our next generation has a solid understanding of where our food comes from.”
