HARRISBURG – More than $4.7 million in state grants were awarded to school districts and municipalities in the 50th Legislative District, Rep. Bud Cook (R-Greene/Washington) announced today.
“My bosses – the residents and local leaders in Greene and parts of Washington counties – have identified key needs for their schools and communities, and these grants deliver the help they need to get the projects moving forward,” Cook said. “Each of these grants represents an important investment in the health, safety and quality of life in our region.”
Four grants were awarded through the statewide Local Share Account program, which is supported by state gaming revenues. Those grants are as follows:
• Center Township – $850,000 for a sanitary sewer extension project, including replacement of the existing wastewater treatment plant at the West Greene School District and installing additional piping to serve more than two dozen homes currently served by failing on-lot sewage disposal systems.
• East Bethlehem Township – $743,210 to demolish four blighted structures on First Street, Community Street, College Avenue and Ridge Street. Future uses for the properties include a historical park, housing and potential business opportunities.
• Greene Township – $128,051 to purchase a new dump truck with plow and spreader to help the township better maintain its 32 miles of roadway.
• Morris Township – $505,521 to expand the township’s community center to include outdoor areas such as a playground, pavilion and new pathways to connect the locations.
Additionally, two area school districts were awarded grants through the Public School Facilities Improvement Grant Program. They include:
• Bethlehem-Center School District – $1.5 million to update the HVAC and boiler system at Bethlehem-Center Elementary School.
• Jefferson-Morgan School District – $1 million for a roof replacement and HVAC project at the Jefferson-Morgan Elementary School.
The grants were given final approval Tuesday at a meeting of the Commonwealth Financing Authority.
