Three Schools in 50th District Awarded Grant Money for Solar Projects, Cook Says

May 21, 2025

HARRISBURG – Rep. Bud Cook (R-Greene/Washington) today announced three schools in the 50th District are receiving nearly $700,000 from the Solar for Schools Grant Program. The program seeks to reduce the cost of implementing solar energy systems into schools across the Commonwealth.

The schools receiving money are:

• California Area School District for the project titled “Bright Futures: Powering Education with Solar Energy.” Amount awarded: $367,200.
• Greene County Career and Technology Center for the project titled “GCCTC Solar Project.” Amount awarded: $42,480.
• Intermediate Unit 1 for the project titled “IU1 Solar.” Amount awarded: $259,200.

“Solar projects funded by the grants have the potential to bring tremendous savings to schools,” Cook said. “And when schools can save money, they can use that to invest in students, which is investing in our future.”

Schools that were awarded money can use the funds for costs related to the purchase and installation of equipment, energy storage costs and some administrative costs related to solar projects.

More than 80 grant applications from urban, rural and suburban areas from all over the Commonwealth were received through the program.

“We’re thankful that schools in the 50th District were selected to receive funding through this program,” Cook said. “In addition to coal, oil and natural gas, solar can be a reliable energy source. I look forward to seeing how these projects support energy savings and educational opportunities for our students.”
